Pilsners

The most popular beer style in the world: about 90% of the consumer beer around the world is of this style. A Pilsner is a golden clear lager.

A lager beer is a beer fermented on the bottom of the vessel in cold temperatures, just above freezing. The yeast that ferments at these cold temperatures became widely used in the early 1800's, when mechanical refrigiration became available.

Malt enhancing upon tasting, it leaves the hops to offer a hint of bitterness without lingering and without acridity, and to take on a thirst-quenching role with a surprising flavour for a Pils.

Silly Pils LogoLast century saw large farms in Hainaut brewing barley and hops. Silly is a village lying in the Ath, Enghien and Soignies triangle and is crossed by the Sylle, the river from which the village takes its name. Silly possesses a brewery that was founded in 1850 as Cense de la Tour, and that is today operated by the 5th generation.

From 1947 the Brewery became more prominent than the farm yet was still only producing top fermentation beer like Grisette, Saison and Scotch. Several years later in 1950 when the Brewery already had a chain of bars, it began producing a bottom fermentation beer Pils as part of its product range.

1975 is noted for the purchase of the Tennstedt Decroes Brewery in Enghien which meant that it could add Double Enghien to its range, today available in two forms: brown ale and lager.

1990 saw the creation of a white beer known as Blanche Titje. This beer together with Saison de Silly, Double Enghien and Divine, have contributed to the growth of this independent and traditionally based family business.

But it doesn't stop there! Research efforts have helped in producing the latest family beer, a pink grapefruit flavoured white beer: Pink Killer, with a bright promising future.

Over recent years the Brewery has been enhancing its export business.

Maes is a golden lager beer, it has a fruity, clean and light flavour with a pleasant hint of bitterness.  Pours a light and clear gold with a pure white head. Crisp smell, a bit bitter tasting at first, but actually quite mellow for a pils.

IMaes Beer Labeln 1880, when Egied Maes revived the small Sint-Michaël brewery in Waarloos he had great ambitions. In 1901 Egied Maes turned the running of the brewery over to his sons, Ferdinand and Theophiel. They introduced modern machinery: from then on a steam engine was to drive the millstones in the milling shop and the stirring paddles in the vats. The business was renamed 'the St-Michaël Maes Brothers Steam Brewery and Malt House'. The two brothers perfectly anticipated the market demand for low-fermentation beers. They launched their first lager in the 1920s. In 1926 the third Maes generation entered the business. They made significant investments to build a first-class brewery hall. Their investment soon bore fruit. At the 1930 world exhibition in Antwerp the Maes brewery successfully launched its Prima Maezen Beer. This beer was perfected by the next generations, who contributed a wealth of expertise. They laid the foundations for the lager beer now being sold as Maes. Exceptional care goes into the brewing of Maes. Only the very best lager is good enough to display the Maes brand, so the production method satisfies the strictest quality standards.
